Retail Security consists of a manned security presence to protect the clients premises, stock and staff. This is usually in the form of either a uniformed, visible security presence or a plain clothes store detective. Both forms of security personnel partake in a similar role and must remain alert and fully aware of everything and everyone around them.

In the modern shopping environment, shoplifting can be a major problem to almost all retail entities. This problem and the people responsible for causing it can vary greatly as retail theft suffers from a wider spectrum of offenders than any other form of criminal activity.

The most unlikely and respectable people often make the best and most undetectable  shoplifter, because to the professional shoplifter, this is his or her livelihood and more often than not, their only form of income.
